WHEN I SEE YOU AGAIN. Best friends Jerie Pingoy and RR Pogoy were on opposing sides when Ateneo met FEU.
All eyes were on Jerie Pingoy when he made his debut for Ateneo de Manila University as it came against the school where he came from.
Pingoy, who used to star for Far Eastern University-Diliman, started at point guard for the Blue Eagles and had a forgettable first game – missing all of his six shots from the field while also committing two turnovers.
Asked how it felt to finally play in the UAAP Seniors division, the Ateneo guard said after his team suffered an 88-64 pummeling, “Bad game lang talaga ako. Actually, kami naman lahat.”
And how was it like facing his other alma mater? “Masaya kasi siyempre, that’s my former school. Marinig mo pa lang yung drums, grabe,” he said.
The first-year Eagle downplayed insinuations that he should have come out with more fire up against his former team. “Hindi naman ako nanggigil o nagalit sa kanila,” he said.
However, Pingoy’s fellow Cebuano saw otherwise. “Nakita naman natin lahat. Sobrang gigil at pinipilit niya tira nya,” Tamaraw RR Pogoy said.
Pogoy and Pingoy used to form quite the one-two punch back in Cebu. Before the game, Pogoy shared that he hugged Pingoy whom he called his best friend and jested, “Niloko ko siya na, ‘Ikaw, mag-helmet ka, maghanda ka, sisikuhin kita.’”
After the Tamaraws imposed their will on Ateneo, Pogoy then shared that he again hugged his best friend and told him, seriously this time, “Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Bawi ka, marami oang games. Alam kong babawi ka.’”
According to Pogoy, it was actually Pingoy who recommended that FEU recruit him from Cebu. That is exactly why, as he put it, “Sobrang best friend namin kaya kahit lumipat siya, okay lang. Siya rin naman nagdala sa akin dito.”
After seeing his best friend tally 19 points for his old alma mater, did any question creep into Pingoy’s mind? The rookie Atenean assured his new school, “No regrets at all po kasi this was the school I chose.”
