STATING THE OBVIOUS. FEU just showcased what has been said in the offseason: that they are the favorites this year because of a veteran core.
Time and again in the run-up to the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament, last year’s runners-up were said to be this season’s favorites.
Far Eastern University sure looked like it on Sunday at the MOA Arena in thoroughly dominating Ateneo de Manila University for an entire game, 88-64.
The Tamaraws were hitting on all cylinders right from tip-off with Mike Tolomia and RR Pogoy merging for 21 points to outproduce all of the Blue Eagles who only had 12 points after the first.
Mac Belo then joined in on the fun by scoring seven points in the second as FEU charged towards a 44-26 halftime lead. Reigning MVP Kiefer Ravena poured in 15 markers in the third to allow Ateneo to trim the deficit to 12 a couple of times, but the Tamaraws simply had an answer for anything and everything.
Last season’s runners-up counted four players in double-digits led by Pogoy and Tolomia with 19 and 17, respectively. The Tamaraws shot a scorching 51 percent for the field compared to their opponents who were limited to 31 percent.
Asked if their season-opening victory was a statement of sorts, coach Nash Racela said, “We don’t play for others. We were just fortunate our outside shots were hitting.”
Ravena did everything he can with 25 points, but didn’t have much help from his teammates as the Eagles start the season at 0-1.
