VETERAN LEADERSHIP. Jason Perkins and Jeron Teng allowed DLSU to pull through with a win.
In a game that featured more than a few airballs and in-and-out baskets, it was the consistency of Jason Perkins and Jeron Teng that gave De La Salle University its first win in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The veteran duo made the crucial points that stopped National University’s furious fightback dead in its tracks as the Green Archers toppled the Bulldogs, 67-63, on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
Neither team had much in terms of offense, but the defending champions had it worse as they were limited to only six points in the first quarter – all but five from Gelo Alolino. On the other hand, the Archers mustered 16 points to take a double-digit lead they protected until the final frame.
Alolino and J-Jay Alejandro sparked a late-game rally for the Bulldogs who neared to 59-60 with 1:17 remaining, but Perkins and Teng responded with four unanswered points to re-establish a two-possession lead, 64-59, with 23.6 ticks on the clock.
DLSU defended Alolino and forced Alejandro to two misses from outside while converting three of four free throws to end the game. Even with the season-opening win against the defending champions, Teng said, “A win is a win, but for me, it doesn’t prove anything yet.”
Teng scored a game-high 18 points while Perkins and rookie Josh Caracut added 13 points apiece for the Archers.
The NU effort was fronted by Alolino and and Alejandro who had 16 and 15 points, respectively. The Bulldogs are now 0-1 with the loss.
