“UPFight” and #GoUste were among the trending topics Saturday night, heaping praises on the season’s early winners.

It’s just one win.

But fans of University of the Philippines (UP) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) knew it’s a good sign.

The Fighting Maroons and the Growling Tigers – both stacked at the lower half the past season – cleared separate assignments on Saturday to open the 78th UAAP men’s basketball tournament with aplomb at the Araneta Coliseum.

And their blazing opening-day performances – nearly doused yet re-ignited in the homestretch – spread like wild on Twitter-verse moments after going 1-0.

“UPFight” and #GoUste were among the trending topics Saturday night, heaping praise on the season’s early winners.

No less than UP’s proud alumni expressed their delight to see the Fighting Maroons win their opening game since 2011.

Broadcast journalist Zen Hernandez said the victory “made my day.”  Media colleagues Tina Panganiban-Perez and Jam Sisante tweeted “Claimed” and “Tagumpay!” respectively.

Senators Chiz and Pia Cayetano – both products of the UP College of Law – also joined in the fray.

“Congrats to the UP Fighting Maroons! Congrats Brod Dan Palami! Great win. Great start,” tweeted Escudero with special mention on UP team manager Dan Palami.

Palami for his part tweeted: “We must have done something right.”

Cayetano, who fought for the passage of the law to counteract the UAAP’s residency rule, said: “UP basketball mens starts the season with a win in its first game v UE! 55-62! Always proud to be @UPMaroons!”

Another UP Law alumnus, Sen. Sonny Angara, retweeted Solicitor General Florin Hilbay’s status “nanalo ang UP. pwede na muling mangarap.”

“How AMAZING would it be to start the season with a WIN???? Go UP please make all our dreams come true,” former UP courside reporter Gabby Dario tweeted.

Twitter user Eloi Hernandez even made a special request to the Fighting Maroons, tweeting “Dear UAAP, pwede ba Final Four na agad? @upmaroons No. 1 now at team standings.”

“No bonfire yet. That's for UP's Final 4 moment,” the satirical account Professional Heckler tweeted.

UST for its part stormed the micro-blogging site with a plethora of comments and reactions.

“HAPPY BERTDAY TO ME #GoUSTe,” former UST coach Pido Jarencio’s twitter impersonator @coachpido said. Incidentally, Jarencio is celebrating his birthday on Saturday.

“Isa kang mamaw, @eduardodaquioag!!! Ikaw ang MVP sa puso ko, labyu,” Jarencio’s lampoon account also tweeted, commending UST veteran Ed Dacquioag who led the Tigers with a career-high 28 points.

“The 10-month wait ended with a bang! By all indications, this will be a positively good season for our Tigers! Next assignment, FEU!,” the account UST GROWLING TIGERS said.

Some UST fans tempered their expectations despite the win.

“First game pa lang naman, but i hope the other guys would step up sa mga susunod na games,” said DinDin Legaspi.

Others gave UST’s stars a friendly reminder.

“Yon bawi tayo UST haha Congrats congratulations!! Consistent dapat tayo Ferrer, Daquioag ha!” tweeted user Leonardo.
