TAKING CHARGE. Ed Daquioag has taken over in the final frame of both of UST's wins to start the season.
Far Eastern University’s impressive start in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament lasted for exactly one game as they ran straight into Ed Daquioag and the rest of University of Sto. Tomas who were unwilling to budge.
Daquioag scored the Growling Tigers’ last six points and secured the final loose ball to seal their 72-71 escape against the Tamaraws on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws’ offense had trouble getting of the ground as they fell behind, 35-46, early in the second half. RR Pogoy finally found the mark and scored 11 points in a 30-point third quarter that took a 58-54 edge for FEU heading into the fourth.
UST countered with a 12-7 run capped off by two treys from Kevin Ferrer to retake the lead, 66-65. It was at that point that Daquioag mounted a personal 6-4 run that increased the Tigers’ advantage to 72-69 inside the last two minutes.
Following a long two by Russell Escoto that sent the Tamaraws to just one point down, UST was unable to build on their margin as Jon Sheriff muffed two charities. However, Mike Tolomia was also forced into two turnovers that ended FEU’s chances for a game-winner.
All in all, Daquioag poured in 12 of his 18 points in the final frame to push the Tigers to a second consecutive victory to start the season. Talking about his boys, coach Bong Dela Cruz said in his post-game conference, “Yung boys, nandun yung puso nila. Gustong-gusto nila manalo.”
Mac Belo’s 17 points showed the way for the now 1-1 Tamaraws who were undone by lead guard Tolomia’s 10 turnovers in total.
