Maroons and Archers vie for second win
HEADED TOWARDS TWO. Jeron Teng and DLSU are aiming to be first to two wins.

Games on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum

2:00 PM – DLSU vs UP

4:00 PM – UST vs FEU

The very first win in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball went to the University of the Philippines, but it did not take long before De La Salle University – along with two others – caught up.

The Fighting Maroons’ contention is put to an early test when they face the perennial powerhouse Green Archers on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The victor will be first to two wins and will claim solo first and it will all be determined starting at 2:00 PM. All of the action will be broadcast LIVE on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as streamed LIVE on sports.abs-cbn.com.

DLSU downed the defending champions to open their season by leaning on old reliables Jeron Teng and Jason Perkins. While it was the veterans who pulled through in the clutch, the Taft-based squad was also able to get welcome contributions from youngsters like Josh Caracut and Julian Sargent.

Head coach Juno Sauler expects nothing but the same total team effort even against an upstart as he said, “We’ll have to come out strong again because (UP) has really improved.”

That upstart relied on a surprise outburst from a former De La Salle Greenhills talent to clinch a season-opening victory. During that game, big man Gelo Vito fired three triples in the final frame to finally push UP ahead of a pesky UE side.

Vito’s surprise outburst was fuelled by his coach’s unwavering confidence in all his wards. Even just in his first year, head coach Rensy Bajar is hell-bent on turning the Diliman-based team around as he said, “Lagi kong sinasabi sa kanilang they must believe they can win and they are winners.”
