SEEING RED. Edson Batiller has been the star in UE's back-to-back wins.
With how young the University of the East team is, new names were always bound to make noise for them in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Edson Batiller kept impressing, but it was his fellow rookie Fran Yu who boosted the Red Warriors from a competitive contest all the way to a 89-78 victory versus the Adamson University Falcons on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
General Santos native Batiller built on his breakout performance the last time around with a career-best matching 23 points to go along with eight assists and six steals. Still, the young Falcons stuck around and had the game tied at 57 late in the third.
It was at that point that Yu was sent inside and immediately jumpstarted the UE offense with a 12-0 run. The Warriors then doubled down with five straight points from Batiller punctuating a 10-5 burst that pushed their lead to 79-62 at the midway mark of the fourth.
Quick hits had Adamson threatening at 72-79, but Batiller quashed their hopes with a beautiful corner jumper inside the last three minutes. Talking about his rising star, coach Derrick Pumaren said, “I’m not surprised. I’ve seen what he can do.”
Paul Varilla added 14 points for UE which claimed back-to-back wins after a season-opening defeat.
The Falcons were fronted by a top recruit of their own in Jaydee Tungcab who ended with 16 points, five assists, and five rebounds. The young Adamson squad again competed before falling behind late for the third time in a row.
