Ravena delivers again as Ateneo keeps NU winless
BIG-TIME PLAYER. Ateneo was down for the count two separate times, but Kiefer Ravena was always there to bail them out.

Yet again, the reigning MVP buried a beauty of a shot with the game on the line and yet again, that was all Ateneo de Manila University needed for another win in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Shackled all throughout Wednesday all over the Araneta Coliseum, Kiefer Ravena hit two big baskets that let Chibueze Ikeh have his way inside in the second overtime as the Blue Eagles prevailed over the National University Bulldogs, 74-70.

With Alfred Aroga fouled out, the Eagles’ Nigerian reinforcement manhandled the Bulldog frontline in the second overtime with four rebounds of his teammates’ misses that led to six out of eight charity makes. Ikeh’s interior dominance gave his team a 70-68 lead with 20 ticks on the clock.

Still, Von Pessumal and Jerie Pingoy’s three misses out of four from the line left a window open for NU. With his team only down 68-71, however, Gelo Alolino committed an unforced error and gave possession back to Ateneo.

Sent to the line, Ravena split his free throws before Reden Celda hit a quick layup to close the Bulldogs to 70-72. However, the reigning MVP was left wide open in the ensuing possession and wasted no time in converting his own layup to ice the game.

Ravena top-scored with 21 points, but missed 19 of his 26 attempts. Still, the reigning MVP proved he’s a big-time player with two shots that saved his team in regulation and then the first extra period.

NU was on its way to reinforcing its mastery over Ateneo, ahead 57-54 with 17 seconds remaining in regulation when Alolino’s dribble bounced way too high and Hubert Cani claimed possession of the ball.

Cani immediately forwarded the pass to Ravena who had nemesis Paolo Javelona staring him in the face. Still, the reigning MVP stepped back before rising to launch a three that found the bottom of the net – his first and only made outside shot – and sent the game to overtime.

The Bulldogs were again in front, 62-60, with 16 seconds left in overtime until Ravena barreled his way towards the rim and found an opening for a layup that once again forced extra time. Stating the obvious, coach Bo Perasol said in his post-win conference, “I don’t think we would’ve won it without the heroics of Keifer.”

Alolino led the way for NU with 19 points, but also committed the two crucial turnovers that led to their 0-3 start to the season.
