By the Numbers: Defense fueling UP's hot start
NO, NO, NO. The UP Fighting Maroons have the league's toughest defense so far in the young UAAP Season.

The UP Fighting Maroons are enjoying their best UAAP start in years and based from their early numbers, they're doing it thanks to defense.

Yes, the Maroons are playing tough defense, number one in the league in fact.

After surrendering a league-worst 74.9 points last year, UP is only allowing 62.7 points so far in Season 78, all while only scoring an average of 64 points in three games which is dead-last.

Also, despite their starters scoring a mere 18.3 points per game (dead-last as well and its not even close), the Maroon reserve corps are doing the heavy lifting on offense to the tune of 45.7 points, again number one in the league.

Granted that there are still areas which haunt UP from Season 77 like points off turnovers, second chance points, fastbreak points, assists, free throws and points in the paint, the Maroons are actually shooting well from outside as they rank third in both perimeter points and 3-point field goals.

What does this all mean you ask? Without going into deeper details, the Maroons are holding up on defense despite being lackluster from the other end of the floor.

And that means UP is bound to get better once the shots start to fall.

This is the season the Fighting Maroons are not just asking for respect, they are earning it.
