After the still unbeaten league leaders, only two teams currently own winning streaks in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament: Ateneo de Manila University and University of the East.
Two-game winning streaks collide when the Red Warriors and the Blue Eagles meet on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
The battle between blue and red tips off at 2:00 PM and will be broadcast LIVE on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as streamed LIVE on sports.abs-cbn.com.
Ateneo needed heroics from reigning MVP Kiefer Ravena to dispatch defending champion National University in double-overtime the last time around. Still, the grit exhibited by his young squad made coach Bo Perasol proud.
Moreover, Chibueze Ikeh rose to the occasion and proved to be the difference in the decisive second extra period. Challenging his Nigerian reinforcement to build on his breakthrough, Perasol said, “Ikeh will be key in our championship drive.”
Meanwhile, UE looks to have already adjusted well from the loss of their dominant reinforcement from seasons past in Charles Mammie. First-year guard Edson Batiller has taken over the scoring mantle while Derrick Pumaren’s ever-present press has made up for their lack of size in the interior.
Aside from a continued streak and a share of second, the Red Warriors also have extra motivation heading into their matchup with the Katipunan kids. “We haven’t beaten Ateneo. That’s the only team we didn’t beat last year,” Pumaren said.
