FINDING THEMSELVES. Alfred Aroga and National University look to be back in top form.
Sampaloc can now rest easier knowing that National University finally looks like the defending champions in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Alfred Aroga dominated down low for the second straight time and the Bulldogs proved to be no match for young Adamson University, 75-54, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Coming off an 19-point, 12-rebound double-double the last time around, the Cameroonian center cemented his re-emergence with 16 points and eight rebounds to power NU to a second consecutive victory coming from a 0-3 start.
All of the defending champions’ previous games were close contests and this was the first time they figured in a rout. Even so, coach Eric Altamirano still said, “It looked easy pero we had a hard time in the first half.
The Falcons rallied around the absence of suspended head coach Mike Fermin and had the score level at 19 early in the second. It was at that point that the Bulldogs imposed their will on defense and allowed no makes for the next five minutes while scoring 12 at the other end to take the 31-19 lead they would protect until the final buzzer.
Aroga was not alone in effectively operating inside as little-known Ralph Tansingco posted 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. All in all, NU overpowered their opponents, 48-28, in terms of inside scoring.
Ivan Villanueva was the lone double-digit scorer for Adamson which remained winless through five games.
