Alolino turns firestarter as NU burns down UP
CATCHING FIRE. Just like Gelo Alolino's 4/4 mark from deep to end the first half, NU is perfect in their last three games.

Successfully stretching their winning streak to three games, defending champion National University no longer has more losses than wins in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Gelo Alolino was at the forefront of what proved to be the decisive run late in the first half by going 4/4 from deep in the Bulldogs’ 68-52 victory versus the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

The upstart Maroons kept close, only down 23-24, at the midway mark of the second until Alolino caught fire and uncorked 12 points – and one assist for the other two – in a 14-4 pop that ballooned NU’s lead to 38-27 at the half.

From that point, UP was only able to come as close as eight points with immovable Alfred Aroga roaming the paint. All in all, the Maroons only shot 36 percent from inside the arc because of the Bulldogs’ Cameroonian center.

Alolino wound up with 16 points while Aroga posted a monster 12-point 22-rebound double-double. Talking about their third consecutive victory that has completely erased a 0-3 start, coach Eric Altamirano said, “It’s good to have three straight wins especially coming after 0-3, but we still have a long way to go. We’re just getting our bearings back.”

After racing to a 2-0 start, UP has now lost three in a row with Jett Manuel the only bright spot yet again with 16 markers to his name.
