LOOKING BAD. Coach Rensy Bajar dislikes the defense he has been seeing from UP during their three-game losing skid.

The University of the Philippines are surprises no more in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

A surprising 2-0 start has been thoroughly overcome by a succeeding three-game losing skid. Even worse for the Diliman hopeful is that their team’s defeats have come by an average margin of 13.7 points – bringing back painful memories of the hapless Fighting Maroons of old who went winless in three of the last eight seasons.

Although an offense which has failed to breach the 59-point mark in the last three games is also suspect, head coach Rensy Bajar is pointing at their head-scratching defense to be the culprit in their skid. “Kelangan sa depensa, walang pogi-pogi. Hindi pwedeng mag-relax kami,” he said.

He then added, half-serious and half-joking, “Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Kung gusto niyong magpa-pogi, mag-artista na lang kayo.’"

Indeed, UP has allowed an average of 70 points during their three losses – more than 10 points compared to the 60.5-point average their opponents scored when they were 2-0.

The first-year mentor also admitted that their surprising start may have had an adverse effect on the mentality of his young wards. “Yung overconfidence, hindi dapat pumasok sa isipan namin e. Alam natin lahat saan galing ang UP so dapat every game, may motivation na talaga kami para manalo,” he said.

Just like he said in his interview after their first loss, Bajar reiterated that he and his team observe a so-called “24-hour rule” wherein “whatever happens sa game, panalo o talo, we’ll talk about it today then we’ll talk about our next opponent tomorrow.”

The good news for Diliman is that their boys have far from lost hope. As Bajar put it, “Siyempre masakit yung mga pagkatalo, pero together pa rin kami.”
