Fiery Ferrer shows way as UST stuns Ateneo late
CARDIAC CATS. UST outscored Ateneo, 32-6, in the last 12 minutes and eight seconds of the game.

Ed Daquioag and Karim Abdul made the plays in the endgame, but it was all Kevin Ferrer who made it possible for them to do so and for University of Sto. Tomas to claim a shocker of a win on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

Espana’s all-around forward dropped three long-range bombs to generate a 22-1 tidal wave in the last six minutes that surged the Growling Tigers ahead of the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, 68-58, en route to a share of first in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Ferrer was consistently productive throughout and finished with 27 points built from 6/10 from deep along with nine rebounds to lead the Tigers to their fourth victory in five games.

UST looked dead in the water as the Eagles held a 57-46 advantage with 6:06 remaining until Ferrer went berserk via three triples that accounted for all but two points in an 11-0 run that evened the game at 57. A split from the line by Kiefer Ravena nudged the Ateneo in front by a solitary point before Daquioag and Abdul connived on six straight points to establish a 63-58 Tiger lead with 2:03 to go.

With Ravena opting to make plays for his teammates, the Eagles witnessed three consecutive fruitless possessions courtesy of Von Pessumal and Jerie Pingoy. The reigning MVP finally took a shot inside the last 60 seconds, but UST had him covered while also adding another 5-0 run to cap off their comeback.

Daquioag and Abdul merged for 16 points and 19 rebounds as the UST defense only allowed six points in the last 12:08 minutes of the game.

No other Tiger aside from Ferrer was able to contribute in the first three quarters and Ateneo built a lead of as much as 16 in the third on the backs of Ravena and Pessumal. However, the duo was held to only three points combined in the final frame as the Eagles dropped to 3-2.
