ON A ROLL. DLSU finally looks like a formidable team thanks to big-time rookies Andrei Caracut and Larry Muyang.
After a disassembled start, De La Salle University’s well-stocked weapons are finally cocked and ready to fire off big hits in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Green Archers leaned on Jeron Teng once more, but also received big-time contributions from rookies Andrei Caracut, Larry Muyang, and Josh Torralba in downing the University of the East, 71-64, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Teng and Caracut posted 16 points apiece, Muyang had for himself an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Torralba handcuffed rising star Edson Batiller to grant DLSU back-to-back wins coming from a 1-2 record. “It was a well-earned win. UE kept fighting until the end,” coach Juno Sauler said in his post-game conference
A 12-5 run coming out of the dugout increased the DLSU advantage to 43-31 at the midway mark of the third. Back-to-back treys by Caracut then punctuated another blast that pushed their lead to its biggest at 58-41 early in the fourth.
Still, the Warriors kept coming and mounted a 15-2 rally that closed the gap to 56-60 with 5:15 remaining. Four straight points from Thomas Torres and Caracut finally quelled the uprising and all in all, the Archers’ rookie guard scored 11 points in the final frame to keep his team ahead.
Under pressure all game long, Batiller only had two points and no field goals as UE suffered a third straight setback to drop to 2-4.
