REBOUND. Ateneo is back on track after whipping UP.
This time around in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament, Ateneo de Manila University built a big lead and saw it through completion.
A defense that only allowed 19 makes out of 78 attempts had the Blue Eagles claws’ on the throats of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons all throughout for a 56-43 win on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
This season’s first “Battle of Katipunan” was heated early with the Maroons only down by a hair, 9-10, before Ateneo uncorked seven unanswered points in two minutes to push their advantage to 17-9 after the first.
The other three periods weren’t any different as the Eagles did not let their rivals from across Katipunan to breach the 14-point mark; this, coming after a game where they were outscored 6-32 in the last 12:08. “Unlike the last game, we only allowed 11 points (in the fourth) this time. So it’s a good bounce back for us,” coach Bo Perasol said.
Von Pessumal and Kiefer Ravena scored 11 points apiece to front a balanced attack for Ateneo’s fourth win in six games. Only Paul Desidero, with 12 points, ended in double-digits for UP who fell for the fourth time in a row after a surprising 2-0 start.
