HOT HANDS. UST kept connecting from downtown all the way to a share of first-place.
From the bench to the playing court, Kevin Ferrer repeatedly huddled his University of Sto. Tomas teammates around him on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Apparently, he was giving more than reminders as the heat from Ferrer’s hand spread to all the Growling Tigers in their burning down of the De La Salle University Green Archers, 77-61, that returned them into a share of first in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
With active hands on defense and sweet shooting on offense, UST turned a 19-33 deficit late in the second into a 47-38 advantage at the 3:34 mark of the third. Back-to-back bombs from Mario Bonleon and Louie Vigil punctuated the 28-5 Espana blast that didn’t even have Ferrer on the floor.
The fifth-year forward finally joined in on the fun with his own triple that increased the Tiger lead to its biggest at 17 points, 63-46, to start the final frame. All in all, UST scorched the nets in making 11 of their 24 attempts from deep and converting 42 percent of their field goals.
Jeron Teng had 13 points to lead the way for the Archers who fell to 3-3 ahead of their rivalry game against Ateneo de Manila University.
