This is the first time that NU Pep Squad captain Claire Cristobal is joining her team at the main event of the UAAP CDC. Strange for a team captain? Nah. For the past two years, she has already represented NU in the Group Stunts division—in Season 76, they rose as champs; in Season 77, they placed third.
Still, the main event will prove challenging for the Accountancy senior.
“One minute lang yung sa Group Stunts. Umiikot lang, no traveling and dance. Just stunts,” she says, trying to shrug the pressure off.
“This time, it’s six minutes with dance. Honestly, di naman ako dancer. I’ll try my best na maibigay yung best.”
In truth, Claire getting into cheerleading and cheerdance came as a surprise to her born-shy self. Formerly into gymnastics, this Marcelo H. Del Pilar National High School-originating lass loves how this sport has given her the needed confidence to be a girl who’s sure and proud of herself.
“Sobrang mahiyain ako dati. Di ko humarap sa maraming tao. Dito namuo yung confidence na humarap sa tao. Na-pressure ako kasi dati may doubt ako sa sarili ko. Although, thankful ako na nabigyan ako ng chance na i-represent ang school.”
With head coach Ghicka Bernabe, the experience also instilled in her the value of leadership. And teamwork and camaraderie—which she needs more so now as she leads in defending NU’s #L3GACY tomorrow.
“Di kasi pwedeng mangibabaw ka. Dapat marunong makisabay, makisama, and to build relationship with others. Iisipin mo dito and value ng iba more than yourself,” she declares.
Claire says NU is confident to remain on top, and describes the trainings as almost grueling. As a matter of fact, a week before the competition, the squad members got excused in class to, well, train. Over at One-Ecom Bldg at the Mall of Asia Arena, Claire and the rest of NU Pep worked on keeping everyone afraid of the Bulldogs.
“Mahirap talaga. Walang bagay na madali. Iisipin mo kung bakit ka lumalaban, kung ano yung goal mo. Kami—di lang para mag-graduate, but also with also flying colors. Ako, iniisip ko lagi family ko. Kaya di ako pwedeng mag-give up lang.”
Their weapon of choice tomorrow? “Makapigil-hinigang stunts and pyramids.”
When not competing, Claire loves to spend her free time at church—at the Doulus for Christ World Harvest Ministry.
“Pag walang pactice, almost whole day ako sa church namin. Dun din namo-mold yung leadership ko. Si Lord din talaga inspiration ko, thankful ako lagi sa mga skills na pinahiram nya talaga sakin. Di lahat nabibiyayaan ng ganito.”
