#UAAPCDC2015: Adamson Pep Squad goes against flow in hopes of breakthrough

SERIOUSLY FUN. Adamson will perform a fun, serious, and fresh routine in its quest for a podium finish.
Fun. Serious. Fresh.
These will be infused in Adamson University’s routine this 78th UAAP Cheer Dance Competition as the dancers in blue and white aim to soar higher.
Missing just an inch from a podium finish last year, the San Marcelino-based Pep Squad prepared a performance that deviates from the norm and something fresh.
“Most likely magkakaroon ng mga magkakapareho ng gagawin, so I made the decision to go against the flow,” said Adamson coach Joseph Mascarnas. “I decided na gagawa ako ng something na hindi nila masasabi na pareho ng ginagawa ng mga kalaban namin sa UAAP.”
The Adamson Pep Squad mentor vowed that his team will be more competitive this year. “Siguro this time makikita nila na something na fun naman talaga. Masaya naman pero at the same time serious. Talagang lalaban kami this year,” Mascarnas added.
It has been 13 years since the Adamson Pep Squad stood at the podium, taking the runner up honor behind the perennial favorite University of the Philippines before falling short of a top three finish in the succeeding years.
The squad landed at fourth spot last season, garnering 600 points, just 25 points behind third placer University of Sto. Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe when the event adopted a new scoring system supervised by officials of the National Cheerleading Championship.
With a sailor costume and a navy theme, Adamson made its presence felt by taking the top spot in tosses last edition.
This time, they want to up the ante while maintaining their grip in the tossing category. “Sinisigurado ko pong mas difficult po yung papakita namin ngayon,” said Adamson flyer Jaira Ventura.
“Pagdating sa stunts hindi po kami magpapahuli. Sa tosses po, lalo na po na nag-rank no. 1 kami last year. Kailangan naming ma-maintain ‘yung no. 1 na ‘yun,” she added.
Adamson only had three deductions last year under the scoring system for their cheer but got low points in the dance element.
They want to address it this year by strengthening their dance routine with more eye-catching moves and grooves and with better music. “Pinilit po naming pagandahin ang dance namin kasi medyo dun po kami mababa last year,” said team captain Carlo Estelita.
Also, Mascanas added that Adamson made improvements on all elements overall, giving an all-out effort to vie for a better finish this time.
“Every year talaga I make it a point na lalabas ang mga bata na palaging prepared. I just made it a point na talagang kailangan naming ma-hit ang lahat ng elements,” the mentor said. “Hindi lang lang naman sa stunts kami nagpalakas kundi pati sa pyramid. Tapos sa tumbling talaga masasabi kong bumuhos talaga kami ng sobra.”
The 2015 UAAP Cheerdance Competition will take place on Saturday at the MOA Arena. All of the participants’ talents will be on full display LIVE starting at 2:00 PM only on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as sports.abs-cbn.com.
