CHANGE IS GOOD. Two-time champions and perennial top-three finishers FEU are hoping that a some new changes can lead to old success
It’s been quite a while since the FEU Cheering Squad hoisted UAAP Cheerdance Competition gold - six years to be exact.
FEU’s reign as cheerdance champions came amidst a UP dynasty that saw the Diliman-based squad win gold five times in six years.
A year ago, FEU went with an oriental-themed routine that relied less on props and showcased the squad’s athleticism and dancing abilities.
Unfortunately, their performance landed them on the bottom half of the judges’s scorecards, something that the FEU Cheering Squad isn’t used to.
While FEU has only won the Cheerdance Competition twice (1998, 2009), they’ve often found themselves finishing among the best, making them the school with the third-most top-three finishes.
This year however, the green-and-gold squad hopes to shake things up and return to familiar territory atop the competition, and with a new head coach in Randell San Gregorio at the helm, the two-time champions could do just that.
“Yes, we have a new head coach, which is coach Randell, and maraming nagbago sa training program, which is really good, kasi ngayon, ang goal namin is to be better,” said dance coach Chris Nocon.
So what can we expect from this year’s FEU Cheering Squad? According to coach Chris, they’ve got some surprises in store for competition day. “As always, the gymnastics skills of the FEU Cheering Squad is always in the top three…we have a lot of surprises this year, and you will find those things out when you watch the competition on the day itself,” he said.
For co-captain Jovilyn Verceles, the goal is to make it into the top three, but of course the ultimate goal is to go all the way. “Mas handa po kami ngayon, mas may discipline kami na mag-push pa, para maka-top three,” she said.
She also assured fans that this year’s squad will definitely be worth getting excited for.
“Talagang ka-abangabang ang FEU, bagong FEU ang makikita niyo ngayon!”
The 2015 UAAP Cheerdance Competition will take place on Saturday at the MOA Arena. All of the participants’ talents will be on full display LIVE starting at 2:00 PM only on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as sports.abs-cbn.com.
