TRADITIONAL POWERHOUSE. They erased a bitter memory last year, now the Salinggawi Dance Troupe wants you to remember they are elite too.
After a successful return to cheerdance prominence in Season 77, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (SDT) are looking to take the next step in restoring their previous status as UAAP's elite.
Bouncing back strong from their horror performance two years ago to take third place in 2014, Salinggawi is managing expectations for Season 78 to keep their focus at the task at hand.
But it does not mean that they are not going after the gold.
Armed with a "fearless" and "strong" theme, the eight-time champion Salinggawi are on the hunt for their first championship since 2006.
Perhaps molded by the team's relative lack of hardware in the past couple of years, the team is more bonded this year, with their chemistry sky high. "Yung pag-gel din kasi nung group nag-improve din kasi yun yung one thing na nawala kasi sa previous years," head coach Ramon Pagaduan said.
Despite training to showcase improved stunts this year to challenge perennial rivals UP Pep Squad and two-time defending champion NU, Salinggawi will not be sacrificing finesse in their performance. "Nag-improve kami sa stunts, sa pyramids," Pagaduan added.
"Yung ginagawa po namin ngayon mas techinal pero we make sure na hindi compromised yung linis," SDT captain Gladys Cruz added.
Known to be the best dancers in all of the UAAP, the Salinggawi Dance Troupe will always rely on their strong dance routine to go with their improved stunts to break through this season.
And as always, SDT has something up their sleeves in terms of their colorful props.
"Masasabi po namin na medyo mas pasabog ulit yung props namin, may pasabog po talaga," Cruz said.
With the emergence of NU as a new cheerdance power, UST remains tied with UP for the most CDC titles at eight, but with renewed focus and confidence, Salinggawi wants to take over with a record ninth championship.
Safe to say there will be no more horror shows from Salinggawi, just a powerful and elegant performance the team is always known for.
The 2015 UAAP Cheerdance Competition will take place on Saturday at the MOA Arena. All of the participants’ talents will be on full display LIVE starting at 2:00 PM only on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as sports.abs-cbn.com.
