#UAAPCDC2015: UE Red Squad has had enough with 13-year podium drought

NEW BLOOD. University of the East will field a rookie-laden team hoping to end a 13-year podium finish drought.
After a disappointing performance last year, the University of the East Red Squad only has one thing in mind: to bounce back in the 2015 UAAP Cheerdance competition.
The Recto-based squad will step on the mat with more confidence than last time, banking on their long preparation to improve from their previous finish though practically fielding a new team with only four veterans.
“Kasi ang team ngayon is comprised mostly of rookies pa rin talaga. Majority of the previous members are gone. We wanted to start a new team, bumuo ng bagong team na desidido,” said UE coach Gibson Alegre. “We want them to showcase yung disiplina nila.”
The Red Squad doubled their efforts in practice, giving extra focus on perfecting their pyramids and stunts and the right timing of their mounts and dismounts.
These were the elements that flawed UE’s performance in 2014 that saw the red and white squad falling in the cellars at seventh place just 8.5 points better than last place Ateneo de Manila (494.5).
With Mindanao Warrior theme, the Red Squad gave quite an impression at the start of their routine. But incomplete stunts, bad landing on their dismounts, and collapse in their pyramids gave the team a lot of deductions under the new scoring system used in the competition.
To address these mistakes, they practice six times a week for five to six hours.
Leaving the past behind, UE promises to give an all-out performance this time around with hope of impressing the judges.
“Ibang-iba sila ngayon compared sa mga previous years. 'Di lang dumoble, tumriple yung skills nila dahil nag-focus kami sa kung ano yung kalakasan ng team,” added Alegre, who shares the coaching and choreography duty with Dico Joe Ili.
The last time the Red Squad stepped on the podium was in 2002 as runner up for University of Sto. Tomas.
“Tama na yung taon na lagi kaming nasa huli. Siguro naman ito yung taon na makikita natin na yung pula naman ang nasa itaas,” said Ili.
The 2015 UAAP Cheerdance Competition will take place on Saturday at the MOA Arena. All of the participants’ talents will be on full display LIVE starting at 2:00 PM only on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as sports.abs-cbn.com.
