All worth the wait.
National University skipper Claire Cristobal cherished the moment when their school’s name was called for the third straight year as the UAAP Cheerdance Competition champions at the Mall of Asia Arena, Saturday.
For the first time, the fourth year accountancy student celebrated with the squad after spending her first two years as part of the five-man stunts team with the flexible star flyer wowing the crowd and judges on her way to winning the event in 2013.
“Masaya ako kasi naging part na ako ng team,” said the Malolos, Bulacan pride.
What makes this title sweeter for Cristobal was the fact that the team did it even with flaws in their routine.
The cheerdancer was actually part of the group that spilled one of their four pyramids.
“Actually I’m part of the group na nagkaroon ng flaws pero katulad ng laging nire-remind sa amin ng mga coaches namin during practice na hindi ka pwedeng gumive up sa gitna ng laban kailangan tapusin mo yun,” she said.
“Magkamali ka man may kasunod pa puwede kang bumawi.
Cristobal added that it was the trust of their coaches that gave them the confidence to keep their focus on their routine.
Keep the energy.”
“As a team captain hindi ko pwede ipakita sa members na ako yung nalaglagan, mada-down ako, hindi, kailangan kong i-lift up ang sarili ko, encourage ko ang sarili ko na mayroon pang kasunod kailangang bumawi, kailangang lumaban.”
Cristobal admitted that they felt the pressure of the crowd jeering at their mistakes, but as the saying goes, “the show must go on.”
“Actually may tense na “Oh! Sobrang saya nila na nalaglagan kami”. But sabi ko may panlaban pa kami. So sa susunod e di bawi.”
And they did it… in a bark-to-back-to-back fashion.
