First step --- Ateneo de Manila eliminates University of the Philippines in the first phase of the 78th UAAP men's badminton stepladder semifinals.
Ateneo de Manila assured itself of a podium finish in the UAAP Season 78 men's badminton after a thrilling 3-2 squeaker over University of the Philippines in the first stepladder semifinals match Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Hans Bernardo's 21-11, 21-18 decision over Carl Clemente in the third singles gave the Blue Eagles' the victory.
In the next stage of the stepladder, Ateneo, the Season 76 titlists, will face twice-to-beat De La Salle on Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
The semifinals survivor will take on defending champion National University in the title round next week.
The Bulldogs are holding the thrice-to-beat advantage after sweeping all seven ties in the eliminations.
The Green Archers, last season's runner-up, finished No. 2 in the eliminations with a 6-1 record.
"We're really proud on how the boys performed today and we are ready against La Salle. We're just taking it one step at a time," said Ateneo coach Kennie Asuncion-Robles.
The Fighting Maroons forged a decider after Roberto Pineda and Vincent Manuel tripped the hard-fighting pair of Fides Bagasbas and Emilio Mangubat, 21-17, 21-18, in the second doubles.
UP started on the right foot as Miguel Leonardo outlasted Carlo Remo, 21-10, 17-21, 21-10, in the opening singles before Ateneo leveled with Clarence Filart's 16-21, 21-10, 21-18 victory over Wilson Lopez in the second singles.
Bernardo then teamed up with Carlo Remo to rip Ethan Malelang and Leonardo, 21-14, 21-14, in the first doubles match to put the Eagles ahead.
