Valdez shines in return to UAAP beach volleyball action

Alyssa Valdez opened her return to the sands with a victory for the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles.
Crowd-favorite Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles bannered by back-to-back UAAP indoor volleyball Most Valuable Player Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan started their campaign in the 78th UAAP women's beach volleyball tournament on a high note Friday at the MOA Sands by the Bay.
The Lady Eagles overwhelmed University of the Philippines' Arielle Estranero and Vina Alinas, 21-9, 21-19, in Ateneo's lone game in the opener that saw the return of Valdez to the sands after playing a reserve role in the last two seasons.
“Sobrang init nakakapanibago compared sa indoor volleyball,” said Valdez, who last saw action in the event three years ago.
“We are really lucky talaga to have a good game today. Actually marami pa ring errors pero we’re happy we got the win,” added Valdez, who is seeking her first beach volleyball crown after her numerous titles in indoor volleyball.
Meanwhile, last year's finalists defending champion University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle started on a wrong foot to start their respective campaign.
The Adamson Lady Falcons duo of Mylene Paat and Jessica Galanza shocked the Tigresses tandem of Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera, 16-21, 21-17, 15-13, in the opening match.
Lady Spikers tandem of Cyd Demecillo and Kim Fajardo absorbed a stinging 21-15, 17-21, 16-14 loss at the hands of Far Eastern U Lady Tamaraws' Bernadeth Pons and Kyle Atienza.
In other results, National University Lady Bulldogs pair of Roma Doromal and Jasmine Nabor came from a set down to turn back pesky the University of the East duo of Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat, 20-22, 21-19, 15-5, in their first game.
In the afternoon session, Rondina and Rivera came back to beat Doromal and Nabor in straight sets, 21-14, 21-14, while Demecillo and Fajardo turned back Estranero and Vinas, 21-14, 21-15, as the Tigresses, the Lady Spikers and the Lady Bulldogs ended the day tied at 1-1.
In the men's division, titleholder NU outlasted Adamson, 21-14, 19-21, 15-10, UST nipped FEU, 21-19, 13-21, 19-17, Ateneo tripped UP, 21-16, 21-18, and La Salle edged UE, 21-10, 19-21, 15-13.
