STONE COLD STUNNER. Chris Javier delivered the big blows as UE finished an elimination round sweep of NU.

The University of the East claimed their first win in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament courtesy of National University.

Now in the second round, things have not changed as the Red Warriors downed the Bulldogs once again, 52-47, to finish an elimination round sweep of the defending champions on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

As expected, the two teams entangled themselves in a defensive battle and NU just had a bit more offense after two quarters, up by seven at the half. A short stab from Kyle Neypes then gave the defending champions their biggest lead of the game, 30-21, early in the third.

It was at that point that the Warriors sent their defensive pressure into overdrive as Chris Javier and Paul Varilla merged for all but three points in a 16-4 blitz that claimed a 37-34 lead. Javier then pushed the UE advantage to its highest at 47-41 at the midway mark of the final frame.

The defending champions closed the gap to 45-49 inside the last two minutes and got the ball back after a defensive stop, but Alfred Aroga’s layup rolled around the ring before falling into the hands of UE.

Javier finished with 16 points, including two big bailout baskets in the last four minutes that kept the Bulldogs on a leash. Varilla added 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals as the Warriors finally arrested their four-game slide to move to 3-5.

Alfred Aroga and Gelo Alolino combined for only 17 points as NU is again handed a losing streak, this time two in a row coming from a 3-3 record.
