Kevin Ferrer caught fire in the fourth quarter to rally the University of Sto. Tomas to a come-from-behind win over De La Salle to start the second round of eliminations.
University of Sto. Tomas clamped on defense in the fourth period as Kevin Ferrer caught fire with his perimeter shooting to carry the Tigers to 81-79 win over the De La Salle Green Archers Sunday in the 78th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Big Dome.
The Tigers poured in a decisive 14-2 run to open the payoff period to erase a seven-point deficit and another spurt to break a tied game in the midway mark of the last quarter for the finishing kick.
Ferrer scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter after a rough start and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead UST to its seventh victory in eight games to sit beside Far Eastern University atop the standings.
“Iba na yung second round kasi yung mga teams nakapag-adjust na sa amin. Kailangan mag-double effort kami sa mga ginagawa namin sa second round,” said UST coach Bong Dela Cruz, whose wards mirrored their come-from-behind victory against the same victim in the first round.
Cameroonian center Karim Abdul top scored for UST with 18 points and 11 boards, Ed Daquioag had 17, Louie Vigil finished with 13 while Marvin Lee exploded with four three pointers for 12 markers.
“Ito yung hinihintay naming laro na maging balance yung attack namin pero we have to step up more sa defense namin,” the mentor said.
The Tigers started sluggish and played catchup in the first three quarters. Green Archers point guard Thomas Torres opened the second half with a triple to give La Salle its biggest lead, 48-37.
UST trailed, 66-59, going into the fourth period before Dela Cruz instructed his boys to play zone defense specifically against DLSU ace Jeron Teng.
“We played zone against Jeron so every time he touched the ball we played zone against him,” said Dela Cruz.
With the Green Archers missing their shots, Ferrer scored nine straight points in UST’s fourth quarter run to post a 73-68 lead with 7:09 remaining.
Prince Rivero single-handedly tied the game at 73 in the last four and a half minutes for La Salle, but the Green Archers were hit by another drought – a 0-for-10 field goal shooting – as the Tigers pulled away.
Torres ended the drought in the last five seconds with a triple while Teng knocked a buzzer-beater half court heave for the final score.
Teng scored 16 points, Rivero got 13 while Joshua Torralba and Torres posted 12 and 11, respectively, for La Salle which slid to 4-4 record tied with Ateneo de Manila.
DLSU fired 23 points in the second quarter to turn a slim 22-21 lead at the end of opening period to a 45-37 advantage at the break.
Rivero and Torralba scored eight point each to lead the Green Archers, which played without point guard Andrei Caracut who is ill with an allergy, in the first 20 minutes.
Karim Abdul and Kevin Ferrer, on other hand, had a rough start for the Tigers with a combined 14 markers and six rebounds in the first half.
