PRESSURE COOKER. Since breaking out in the first five games, Edson Batiller is yet to breach the double-digit mark in scoring.
In only his first five games in the UAAP, Edson Batiller took the league by storm with averages of 20 points in 47.6 percent shooting, 2.2 triples, 3.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 steals, and only 1.8 turnovers.
With such a spectacular introduction in big-time basketball, the transferee from General Santos City was quickly anointed as the new face of the rebuilding project the University of the East is undergoing.
However, the 21-year-old has seemed to have difficulty with the recognition as the Red Warriors’ symbol of hope. Since then, he has failed to breach the double-digit mark in scoring – only norming 4.8 points in 15 percent shooting, 0.3 triples, 1.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 3.5 turnovers in the last four games.
Talking about his struggles, Batiller said, “’Tong four games na ‘to, talagang nahirapan ako. Off talaga.”
The UE rookie believed defenses have yet to adjust to his game and that his slump has been caused by no one else, but himself. “Para sa akin, sarili ko lang kalaban ko,” he said.
In such light, Batiller said he recognized the solution also lies within himself. “Ngayon, inuunti-unti ko talaga ang pagbangon. Kelangan ko lang mag-work hard pa,” he said.
