FEU enters UAAP beach volleyball finals, Ateneo still alive
Staying alive --- Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan forced a rubbermatch for the last finals berth in the 78th UAAP women's beach volleyball tournament against the No. 2 seed De La Salle.

The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws secured a spot in the best-of-three championship of the 78th UAAP women’s beach volleyball tournament after booting out Adamson in the Final Four in a rainy Saturday playdate at the MOA Sands By The Bay.

Armed with a twice-to-beat advantage, the top seed Lady Tamaraws pair of Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza shot down the Adamson Lady Falcons tandem of Mylene Paat and Jessica Galanza, 21-13, 21-19, to advance in the finals scheduled Monday.

They will await the winner between Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles and De La Salle Lady Spikers in the knockout semifinals Monday.

The crowd darlings Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan of Ateneo extended their semis series against the No. 2 seeded pair of Kim Fajardo and Cyd Demecillo of DLSU, 21-16, 24-22.

FEU took the no.1 spot after beating Adamson, 21-9, 21-14, in the morning session to end its eliminations campaign with a 6-1 win-loss slate.

The Lady Spikers, on the other hand, turned back the Lady Eagles in their playoff match for the semis incentive, 21-16, 21-19, after both squads finished with 5-2 records at the end of the eliminations.

Meanwhile, the Blue Eagles advanced outright to the finals and secured a thrice-to-beat advantage after sweeping the 7-game elims.

The pair of Mark Espejo and Ysrael Marasigan made short work of the Red Warriors, 21-6, 21-15, to take the first championship berth.

Ateneo will face in the finals the winner between twice-to-beat advantage armed National University Bulldogs and University of Sto. Tomas Tigers in the stepladder semifinals, still being played as of posting.

UST defeated FEU, 21-13, 17-21, 15-13, in their knockout game.

The Lady Spikers dethroned the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses pair of Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera, 19-21, 22-20, 16-14, in their last elims match in the morning session.

UST finished its campaign on fifth spot with a 4-3 slate.

In other women’s eliminations result, University of the Philippines ended its campaign with a 25-22, 25-21, victory over National University.

The Lady Maroons closed their campaign at sixth spot with a 2-5 card followed by the Lady Bulldogs (1-6) while the Lady Warriors are dead last in a winless stint including an 8-21, 7-21, drubbing from Ateneo to end their campaign.

In the men’s division end of elims, DLSU hurdled UP, 16-21, 21-14, 15-21, to end up with a 2-5 record tied with Adamson in fifth to sixth place. UP is in seventh with a 1-6 card while UE is winless in seven games.
