FLIGHT SCHOOL. Kiefer Ravena's effort all over the court inspired his teammates to do the same and get their campaign back on track.
For more than a few times on Saturday at the MOA Arena, Kiefer Ravena sent himself all over the floor to make all the plays for Ateneo de Manila University.
With the reigning MVP exhibiting how much he wanted to get back to winning in the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament, the other Blue Eagles only followed suit as they destroyed the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 87-72.
The young Falcons hung around, only down 35-39 at the 4:04 mark of the second quarter until Ravena and Gwynne Capacio hooked up to break the game wide open. A Capacio to Ravena fastbreak and then a Ravena to Capacio halfcourt set capped off an 11-4 burst that pushed Ateneo to 50-39.
A basket from Joseph Nalos allowed Adamson to go into halftime with only a single-digit deficit, but coming back out of the dugout, the reigning MVP and the rest of the Eagles kept their foot on the pedal and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Ravena nearly had a triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds while three other Ateneo players ended in double-figures to help their team rise to 5-4.
Frustrations boiled over for the young Falcons when, behind 47-58 and looking for a defensive stop, Nalos dragged down Vince Tolentino by the face. Coming to the defense of his teammate, Ravena rushed right at Nalos.
Fortunately, things did not escalate further as officials immediately took control of the situation. Ravena incurred an unsportsmanlike foul while Nalos was slapped with a disqualifying foul for his actions.
With their leading scorer sent out of the playing court, the Falcons were carried by Pape Sarr’s 16 points as they suffered their eighth loss in nine games.
