Thrice-to-beat National University takes Game 2 of the 78th UAAP boys volleyball finals and are now a win away from clinching its first title.
National University stormed back from its stunning Finals opener loss with a 25-12, 18-25, 25-21, 26-24 decision over University of the East to move closer in annexing its first-ever boys title in the 78th UAAP high school volleyball tournament Tuesday at the Adamson University gym.
The Bullpups, who regained the thrice-to-beat advantage in the series, were in cruise control in the opening set, but the Junior Warriors stormed back in the second frame to level.
NU had a hard time fending off UE in the third and fourth sets, but the Bustillos-based spikers held steadier to get back on the winning track.
The Junior Warriors, who stole Game 1 with a surprisingly easy 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 last Monday, rallied from a 18-23 deficit in the fourth courtesy of skipper Bryan Bonoan to tie at 23-23 but a service error by Angelo Basilan allowed the Bullpups to move closer to match point.
Dazyl June Cayamso closed out the one hour, 45 minute match with a kill off two UE blockers to give NU the victory.
Game 3 is scheduled at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Adamson Gym, with the Ed Barroga-mentored Bullpups eyeing to end the Junior Warriors' 11-year reign. Game 4, if necessary, will be played Thursday at the same time.
NU is gunning for a high school volleyball double, as its girls team earlier won the title at the expense of University of Santo Tomas.
