Siguro kailangan na i-remind (ang team) na there are more important things besides that --- Kiefer Ravena
Ateneo de Manila University doesn't want to be affected by another off court distraction.
With pressure mounting in their final push for a Final Four spot in the 78th UAAP men’s basketball tournament, Blue Eagles team captain Kiefer Ravena is taking it to himself to keep the team focused on their main goal.
The embattled Katipunan-based squad got themselves dragged into another negative headline when one of their cagers got involved in a drunken rage early Sunday along Timog Avenue in Quezon City.
It came a week after discontented Ateneo alumni wanted the head of coach Bo Perasol, who after getting the assurance of support from the school’s management despite the criticisms announced that this season will be his last tour of duty for the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo is currently in a tie with arch-rival De La Salle University for third to fourth spots in the standings with 5-4 win-loss records behind league-leading University of Sto. Tomas and last year’s runnerup Far Eastern University, who both sport 8-1 slates.
Ravena, who is in his last playing year for Ateneo, which missed the finals in the last two seasons after building a five-peat dynasty, said that they can’t let these things get in their way.
“Siguro kailangan na i-remind (ang team) na there are more important things besides that,” he said in a phone interview with ABS-CBN Sports.
John Apacible was caught on camera shouting expletives and challenging a certain Yan Bote, who was recording the whole scene that went viral over the social media, to a fist fight after the Blue Eagle hit the latter’s car. Apacible was holding a vanity plate with a “COUNCILOR” on it which according to reports belonged to his girlfriend.
Ateneo released a statement about the incident Sunday and team manager Epok Quimpo confirmed to ABS-CBN Sports of suspending Apacible in the remainder of the eliminations – a total of five games.
Ravena said that they have to get their minds off these distractions.
“Nangyari na yun, wala nang magagawa,” said Ravena.
He wanted the team to make it a rallying point instead of another hurdle.
“Sa mga nangyari, kailangan maging focus lalo,” he added.
