MVP Fajardo played through cramps in beach volleyball final
"Nag-cramps po ako on both legs kagabi, pero no excuse, a game is a game." - DLSU's Kim Fajardo

Kim Fajardo played through cramps in all three games Wednesday, but no amount of pain could stop the De La Salle star from fulfilling her destiny.

"Kapag athlete ka ang pinakamalakas na muscle na kailangan mo ay puso," she said.

And what a strong heart she has.

The ailing Fajardo and partner Cyd Demecillo braved a long day under the sweltering sun to deliver the Lady Spikers' first taste of the UAAP women's beach volleyball title, sweeping the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the best-of-three finals series at MOA Sands by the Bay.

"At last, nakuha rin namin," said Fajardo, who last year with the same partner were denied of the crown by University of Sto. Tomas.

The La Salle tandem started the day with an early morning come-from-behind 20-22, 21-14, 16-14 victory over Ateneo's Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan in their semifinals rubbermatch for the right to face FEU's Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza in the finals.

The Lady Spikers were tested in the opener 21-17, 16-21, 15-12 before winning in straight sets, 21-16, 25-23, in Game 2.

Fajardo, named season Most Valuable Player, said that she suffered cramps on both legs the night before when she and Demecillo played for Meralco in the Philippine Superliga.

"Nag-cramps po ako on both legs kagabi," she said. "Pero no excuse, a game is a game."

"Medyo mabigat yung pakiramdam ko sa mga hita ko. Kaya every time pinapaliguan ng yelo pero OK lang," Fajardo added.

She hopes that their beach volleyball conquest, a Cinderella finish, can inspire the team to take back the indoor volleyball crown from their arch rival Ateneo's turf in Katipunan.

"Actually noong una di ba parang 0-2 kami? Sabi ko hindi tayo pwedeng ganito lang," she said. "La Salle tayo kailangan may patunayan tayo since senior kami ni Cyd."

Fajardo wanted to set an example for her younger teammates.

"Para sa akin kasi, na kahit sana dito sa outdoor - sa beach volleyball - may mapagkunan sila ng inspirasyon," she added. "Na sana masasabi nila sa sarili nila na "Uy sina ate Kim nag-champion sana tayo din." Yung may mapaghuhugutan sana sila ng lakas ng loob."
