University of Sto. Tomas captures the men's UAAP taekwondo title.
University of Sto. Tomas narrowly captured the men's crown as it averted a championship shutout in the UAAP Season 78 taekwondo tournament Friday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Growling Tigers bested National University, 6-1, and University of the East, 5-2, in the final day to finish their campaign with five wins against a loss.
The Red Warriors also wound up at 5-1 after a 4-3 decision over the Bulldogs, but the Recto-based jins lost the chance of winning their first-ever men's title by virtue of winner-over-the-other rule.
UST thus won a league-best 13th crown, keeping a long streak of having one championship in any division every season since the event started in 1994.
Joaquin Mendoza of the Tigers was named the tournament MVP.
La Salle bounced back from a stunning 1-6 loss to University of the Philippines with a 5-2 decision over Ateneo to finish third with a 4-2 card. Kyle Arsenal of the Green Archers took home the Rookie of the Year honors.
UE, meanwhile, swept all of its six match for its breakthrough championship in the women's division.
The Lady Warriors downed NU, 5-2, and Far Eastern University, 4-3, in the final day to cap a dominant campaign.
Karen Celis and Baby Jessica Cabanal winning the season MVP and Rookie of the Year honors, respectively.
UST finished second with a 5-1 card after beating deposed champion UP, 5-2, and La Salle, 7-0.
The Lady Archers, who beat the Lady Maroons, 4-3, in the morning session, placed third at 4-2.
UST earlier won its second poomsae title, while UE hammered out a three-peat in the juniors division via a five-match sweep.
