Kiefer Ravena scored Ateneo's first 21 points as the Blue Eagles near a Final Four berth and sending defending champion NU packing.
Kiefer Ravena did his best Michael Jordan impression in the first half and the Blue Eagles put defending champion National University on the brink of elimination.
Ravena drained six treys in the first quarter alone as Ateneo dealt the Bulldogs a near-fatal blow, 68-59, in the second round of UAAP Season 78 at the MOA Arena, Sunday.
The King Eagle put up a virtuoso performance to finish with 32 points, 21 in the opening salvo, as Ateneo won its third straight to solidify a Final Four appearance with a 7-4 card.
The Bulldogs can only hope that everything falls their way to secure a return trip to the playoffs as they drop to 4-7.
"It really helped us at the start [Kiefer's scoring barrage]. I emphasized how our bench helped us win the last few games but so much for that already because it took Von and Kiefer to score 52 points," head coach Bo Perasol said. "In the end it was really our defense."
Ravena waxed hot from deep in the first quarter, scoring Ateneo's first 21 points as the Blue Eagles opened up an early double-digit lead that went as high as 15.
The Bulldogs kept the game close as the Blue Eagles started to settle down. NU got as close to three, 54-57, in the fourth after a Gelo Alolino bucket but the Eagles would coast to the victory to sweep the defending champs this season.
Von Pessumal scored 20 points to back up the reigning MVP.
Alolino led the Bulldogs with 17 while Alfred Aroga added 10.
ATENEO (68) - Ravena 32, Pessumal 20, Ikeh 4, Wong 3, Tolentino A 3, Tolentino M 3, Black 2, Nieto 1.
