Tigers top UAAP men's table tennis first round

University of Sto. Tomas streaked to four straight wins to take the no. 1 ranking after the first round of UAAP men's table tennis.
University of Sto. Tomas ruled the men's division first round, while defending women's champion De La Salle went undefeated in seven matches Saturday in the UAAP Season 78 table tennis tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The Growling Tigers streaked to four straight wins, including a stunning 3-1 opening day win over titleholder Green Archers which gave them the No. 1 ranking.
UST, however, dropped a 0-3 decision to National University before ending the first round with identical 3-0 victories against Adamson University and Far Eastern University for a 6-1 record.
After losing to the Tigers, La Salle won six straight, including a 3-1 drubbing of University of the Philippines in a rematch of last season's Finals to place second.
The Tamaraws finished third with a 5-2 slate, while the Bulldogs tallied a 4-3 mark in fourth place.
With reigning Athlete of the Year Ian Lariba leading the charge, Lady Archers capped their first round domination with a 3-1 win over the Lady Maroons in a showdown of the finalists in the last two seasons.
FEU blanked UST, 3-0, for its sixth straight win after a season-opening loss to La Salle to end up in second place. UP and UST are tied in third and fourth spots at 4-3.
In the boys division, De La Salle-Zobel swept all of its six matches to top the first round, while UST and University of the East shared first place in the five-team girls section, which is played for the first time, at 3-1.
