Already eliminated, respect is all Adamson is playing for

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Mike Fermin and Adamson is earning much-deserved this respect late in the UAAP 78 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Adamson University is the only team no longer in contention in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
And yet, they have recently been one of the more competitive sides in the league – splitting their last four assignments, including a pair of upset wins against powerhouses De La Salle University and University of the East.
Apparently, the Falcons’ sudden soaring has to do with a challenge from their coach. As Mike Fermin narrated to ABS-CBN Sports, “Sabi ko sa kanila nun, ‘Sa tingin niyo ba, may respeto satin yung ibang teams? Iniisip lang nila na maglaro nang matino kasi baka matalo sila.’”
He then continued, “Pero hindi yun respeto kasi alam pa rin nilang tatalunin kami. Dapat, ang iniisip nila, ‘Uy Adamson, tatalunin tayo nyan.’ Yun ang respeto.”
The first-year mentor and his boys only netted one win in the first nine games before giving National University a scare. They then followed that up by downing DLSU, but still did not feel that their foes respected them.
After stunning playoff-seeking UE on Saturday, Fermin said that finally, they’re in a place where they feel respected. As he put it, “Gusto lang naming patunayan na we belong. And after this, we’re on our way there.”
Along with earning respect, the Falcons’ coach said that they are more determined than ever to end the season on a winning note. “Lagi ko ngang sinasabi, hindi kami pang-isang panalo lang. Sana sa nangyayari, lumakas pa kumpyansa ng mga bata at maramdaman nila na, ‘Uy, pwede pala kami rito,’” he said.
Even as he has already surpassed former coach Kenneth Duremdes’ one-win total from last season, Fermin said that all he wants is to let his young boys experience more and more success. “Hindi ko iniisip na i-validate yung pag-hire sa akin. Okay na sa akin na kahit papaano, ma-recognize (ng mga tao) na ‘Uy, marunong din pala si Fermin,’” he said.
