HOW SWEET IT IS. UST remains as the only team to have solved the riddle of FEU.
This late in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament, University of Sto. Tomas holds the distinction as the only team that was able to stop the rampage of Far Eastern University.
Nothing changed on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum as the Growling Tigers doubled down and finished off an elimination round sweep of the Tamaraws, 85-76, while also securing at least a playoff for the twice-to-beat advantage.
Karim Abdul and Kevin Ferrer scored 23 and 21 points, respectively, to lead three others in double-digits as the Tigers bucked a slow start and mounted a strong finish for their 10th win in 13 games. Talking about their crucial victory, Abdul said, “It’s just all heart. We had to win this game at all costs.”
The Tamaraws raced to a 17-5 start and stayed ahead until Abdul and Ferrer found their stroke and powered UST into tying the game at 45 by halftime. Coming back out of the dugout, the Tigers kept stroking and had Mario Bonleon joining in on the fun by going on a personal 6-0 run to give his team a 69-59 lead entering the final frame.
FEU trimmed the deficit to only 76-81 inside the last two minutes, but Bonleon immediately responded with another jumper as the UST defense shut down their opponents the rest of the way.
Mike Tolomia scored 17 points to lead the effort for the Tamaraws who suffered only their second setback in 12 outings.
