SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST. Gelo Alolino delivered his career-best scoring output with NU needing every bit of offense it can muster to keep its crown.
Much like their championship run a year ago, National University is playing their basketball late in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Gelo Alolino caught fire in the last two minutes to lead the Bulldogs in warding off the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 75-69, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The defending champions’ third win in the last four games moved them to 6-7 and breathing right behind the necks of incumbent fourth-seed De La Salle University. Talking about their key to victory, coach Eric Altamirano said in his post-game conference, “Let our defense create our offense.”
In a battle of runs, NU garnered a five-point lead in the middle of the second until the Maroons mounted a 13-2 run to take a 33-27 lead early in the third. That was the best shot State U had in them, however, as the Bulldogs clamped down via a 25-7 rush that established for them a 52-40 advantage right before the final frame.
UP rallied and threatened at 60-63 inside the last three minutes, but Gelo Alolino went on a personal 10-2 run to put the game away for the defending champions. Alolino wound up with a career-high 26 points while Alfred Aroga posted a 15-point, 17-rebound double-double.
Jett Manuel and Diego Dario 13 points each fronted the effort for the Maroons who bowed out of contention with a 3-9 slate.
