Abdul says Ferrerís leadership has made the difference
UP TO THE TASK. In the eyes of longtime veteran Karim Abdul, Kevin Ferrer has taken huge strides as team captain.

With Kevin Ferrer turning in an MVP-worthy campaign, University of Sto. Tomas became the first team to clinch a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four of the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Along with his spectacular per game numbers, however, the Growling Tigers have been nothing but satisfied with his spectacular handling of being their team captain.

Another one in a growing and glowing list of examples of Ferrer’s leadership happened during the first quarter of their matchup on Wednesday. After picking up two fouls, Karim Abdul had to get subbed out and showed his frustration on his way to the bench.

Once the Cameroonian sat, his captain went beside him and wrapped an arm around him while saying what were, apparently, words of encouragement. As Abdul narrated to ABS-CBN Sports, “He told me to focus and keep my head in the game.”

Asked if that was indeed the sort of thing Ferrer has been doing as captain, the UST center answered, “(Kevin)… Hindi lang puro salita. Ginagawa niya responsibilidad niya.”

He also added before trailing off, “Unlike last year. We had a captain who....” Looking disjointed for most of last season, the Tigers watched the Final Four while sitting at home.

What makes Ferrer’s transformation into a team leader even more interesting is the fact that he came into the Seniors ranks as player fully-confident in his abilities and both unafraid and unapologetic to show it.

Ask Ray Parks Jr. Ask the many defenders who got a good view of his tongue when he wagged it following a made shot. You know, that player who needed to be reined in by the veterans.

However, that “K-Ferr” is no more as he himself said, “Yun yung natutunan ko sa past four years ko rito. Na kelangan ko mas maging beterano, mas maging mature.”
