42-point man Melecio: ‘Gusto ko makatikim na manalo sa Ateneo’

ALWAYS A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING. Aljun Melecio scored 42 points to make sure he gets his first win against archrival Ateneo.
Ever since he began donning the green and white four years ago, Aljun Melecio never experienced what it was like to win against archrival Ateneo de Manila High School.
That all changed on Saturday as the senior gunslinger gave De La Salle Zobel their first triumph over the Blue Eagles since 2011.
And he did it in style, pouring in 42 points in 58 percent shooting, including a 7/13 clip from deep. “Nanggigil ako kasi last year ko na so gusto ko naman makatikim na manalo sa Ateneo,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.
The last Juniors player to score 40 markers in a game was Jerie Pingoy back when he was starring for Far Eastern University-Diliman. Asked if the performance was a statement of some sort that he’s worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Pingoy, a former MVP, Melecio modestly answered, “Iba pa rin yung Pingoy e, pero sana nga.”
According to the Junior Archers’ main man, taking over the game was far from his mind when the archrivals were just warming up. “Pagpasok ko, inisip kong i-involve teammates ko,” he said.
He then continued, “E ‘di ko alam bakit ako laging nalilibre so tinitira ko na lang.”
Melecio said that he did nothing different in the leadup to the rivalry game. As he put it, “Maganda lang siguro gising ko.”
What was different, however, was who was defending him. With Matt Nieto now in the Seniors division, the task of bottling up the high-scoring Melecio was given to Justin Eustaquio and safe to say, Ateneo’s new designated stopper still has much to learn.
“Beterano kasi si Matt so alam niya galaw ko,” DLSZ’s 42-point man said.
