FAVORITE OPPONENT? After scoring seven of his 13 points in the last four minutes to lead UE to a comeback win, Chris Javier does really seem to play his best against Ateneo.
With the odds not in his favor to get an extended campaign in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament, Chris Javier saw to it to make what could possibly be his second to the last collegiate game count.
The fifth-year forward poured in seven of his 13 points in the last four minutes to dig University of the East out of a four-point hole before second-year man Clark Derige proved clutch to allow the Red Warriors to hold against Ateneo de Manila University, 74-69, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Down 56-60 inside the last five minutes, the Warriors looked to be officially on their way out of contention until Javier had all but two points in a 9-0 rally that took for his team a 65-60 advantage with 1:36 remaining.
Kiefer Ravena would not allow the Blue Eagles to go down that easily, however, and buried a triple to close the gap to 69-72 with four seconds left. Sent to the line, Derige calmly converted both of his shots to ice the game for UE.
Derige and Javier finished with 17 and 13 points, respectively, to lift the Warriors to 5-8. They still need to win their final outing and hope that both De La Salle University and National University drop their last assignments, but Derrick Pumaren’s young squad isn’t out of it just yet.
A still upbeat Pumaren said in his post-game conference, “Hopefully, with the chance we have, we will make good on it in our next game.”
Ateneo’s five-game winning streak was snapped despite the best efforts of Ravena who finished with 28 points. With the loss, the Eagles are now locked into the third-seed with a 9-5 win-loss card to end the elimination round.
