MAN ON FIRE.

With his fiercest foe now in the Seniors division, Aljun Melecio wasted no time in staking his claim as the best guard in the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

The senior gunslinger scorched the nets for 42 points to lead the way for De La Salle Zobel who were making a statement of their own by routing defending champion Ateneo de Manila High School, 84-71, at the Blue Eagle Gym, Saturday.

Without Matt Nieto hounding him for the first time in his four years as a Junior Archer, Melecio took advantage of the open looks he was given and made 58 percent of his shots, including a 7/13 clip from deep. “Nagugulat nga akong bukas ako so tinitira ko na,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.

Still, coach Boris Aldeguer reminded everyone that his boys haven’t won anything just yet. “This is just one game in the season. We still have a long way to go,” he said.

The archrivals were still neck and neck at the half, with DLSZ only ahead, 49-45, until the Blue Eaglets just could not keep up with Melecio’s unbelievable shooting. Jolo Mendoza scored 16 points, but in 38 percent shooting, as Ateneo stumbled right out of the gate in their title defense.

Last year’s runners-up avoided the same fate as Nazareth School of National University warded off fighting Adamson High School, 61-55.

John Lloyd Clemente showed much promise as the new top Bullpup in ending with 18 points and six rebounds while Justine Baltazar chipped in 10 markers and nine boards in their season-opening victory.

In other games, Far Eastern University-Diliman withstood a furious rally by University of the Philippines Integrated School, 58-52, while University of Sto. Tomas High School upended University of the East High School, 77-73.
