PARTNERS IN TIME. Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal's season may have ended with a loss, but they still had one of the most successful 11-year partnerships.
Eleven years is a long, long time for any partnership and we were all witnesses to the end of one on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal played their last games for Ateneo de Manila University and it while it ended with a loss, the blue and white’s dynamic duo definitely have nothing to be ashamed of.
Playing alongside each other since they were in Grade Six, Ravena and Pessumal have seen each other grow from little baller boys into big-time collegiate champions. Four years as Blue Eaglets and five years as Blue Eagles, the two were loyal soldiers who were always at the forefront of Ateneo’s battles.
Now it’s over, unless fate will lead them back to each other in the professional ranks, the back-to-back MVP didn’t hold anything back in expressing his love for his 11-year running mate. “Siyempre ngayong hindi na kami magkikita palagi, si Von mismo mami-miss ko,” he said.
Looking back at the partnership with whom he called his “brother,” the Eagles’ captain said, “Sometimes, he was the Robin to my Batman and sometimes, it was vice versa.”
For his part, the Ateneo sniper said Ravena was “the best player I’ve ever played with.” He had a different metaphor for their twosome, however, as he said, “I remember before, it was Batman and Robin, but now it’s Batman and Superman.”
Pessumal continued, “I’ve always felt that I wasn’t a sidekick to him. I was equally as good as him, just in other ways.”
Whatever the comparison, there is no doubt that the duo only made each other better. “I’ve played with him my whole life and I always know I could count on him and he could count on me,” Pessumal said.
Ravena could only agree in saying, “I really treasure growing as a player and as a person with him.”
