Still in-sync UST leaves no doubt in ending NU’s reign
WE'RE BACK. UST emphatically announced their re-entry into the Finals after dethroning NU.

A new king will be crowned in the 78th Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament and fighting for the right will be the top two teams since the start.

University of Sto. Tomas showed no ill effects from a nearly two week-long layoff and handily handled National University, 64-55, at the Araneta Coliseum, Sunday.

Louie Vigil turned in his best performance of the season with 19 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals to spearhead the starters in combining for 54 points for the Growling Tigers. Indeed, Espana’s old reliables looked as strong as ever in dethroning the Bulldogs while also returning their team to the championship round after a one-year absence.

Kevin Ferrer and Louie Vigil cranked up the UST offensive juggernaut right from tip-off for a 15-2 start. The Bulldogs countered with 10 straight points only to be at the receiving end of another 15-6 blitz by the Tigers for a 30-18 tally near the end of the first half.

With their offense already rolling, UST also amped up the defensive pressure and forced their opponents into a terrible 27 percent shooting clip from the field overall. Talking about their gameplan, coach Bong Dela Cruz said, “Ang haba ng rest namin so sinabi ko i-full court (press) na natin.”

In particular, Jon Sheriff handcuffed Gelo Alolino all game long. In his last collegiate contest, NU’s team leader only had six points, missed 16 of his 17 attempts, and wasn’t a factor in any way.

Still, the Bulldogs didn’t give up and resorted to some intentional fouling in the last two minutes to pull to as close as six points. However, their offense went missing again in the final 60 seconds

Pao Javelona was the only NU player in double-digits with 17 points.

Top-seed UST takes on second-seed FEU in a three-game series that starts on Wednesday at the MOA Arena. Of course, all of the action will be broadcast LIVE on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 as well as streamed LIVE on
