BULLY BALL. Just as Justine Baltazar and Karl Penano were immovable down low, NU stayed at the top after throwing down DLSZ.
Aljun Melecio and De La Salle Zobel were making all the headlines to start the UAAP 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament that everyone forgot that last year’s runners-up were having an impressive start of their own.
Nazareth School of National University made everyone remember about them on Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym as they outmuscled the Junior Archers, 68-53, to remain as the lone undefeated squad in the season.
Justine Baltazar pounded in a monster 11-point, 17-rebound double-double and the Bullpups made a living inside the paint – completely owning the battles of inside points, 40-20, and rebounds, 61-44. Talking about the statement win, team captain Baltazar told ABS-CBN Sports, “Malaking bagay para sa confidence namin.”
Melecio kept DLSZ close with 15 first half points until Baltazar and John Lloyd Clemente connived for 16 points in the third quarter to outscore all of the Junior Archers who only mustered 11.
DLSZ’s senior gunslinger still ended with 19 points, but only four in the second half. The Archers missed 55 of their 74 attempts to fall to 2-1.
Now tied for second with DLSZ are Ateneo de Manila High School and University of Sto. Tomas High School who were triumphant in separate conquests.
Gian Mamuyac turned in his best performance of the season in the Blue Eaglets’ easy 71-55 win over Adamson High School. The Batang Gilas mainstay had 20 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals to show the way in Ateneo’s second straight coming off a season-opening defeat.
On the other hand, the Tiger Cubs won by default after opponents University of the Philippines Integrated School were unable to show up for tip-off. The Junior Maroons will still discuss with the league secretariat, but as things stand, UST is now at 2-1 while UPIS remains winless through three games.
