Tams’ late charge silences Tigers for 1-0 Finals lead
BEEN HERE BEFORE. Just like last season, FEU has a 1-0 lead in the Finals.

Blitzed to begin the final frame, Far Eastern University never wavered from its gameplan of overwhelming its opponents with balance and depth to ultimately take Game One in the Finals of the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Tamaraw starters had all the energy in the last four minutes and turned in a decisive 10-0 stampede that put down the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers for good, 75-64, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.

Losing what was once a 14-point advantage, FEU suddenly found themselves behind, 62-61, inside the last six minutes. After a timeout, however, Mike Tolomia fronted and then ended 10 unanswered points that regained control for the Tamaraws for a tally of 71-62 with 80 seconds to go.

The Tigers were unable to pull any closer as all of Kevin Ferrer and Karim Abdul’s attempts could not find their way into the net. RR Pogoy topped the scoring charts for FEU with 15 points, but he also had more than enough help from Tolomia and Mac Belo who had 14 and 13 markers, respectively.

No Tamaraw logged more than 27 minutes on the floor, exposing the difference in depth between the teams as Ferrer, Abdul, and Ed Daquioag all played more than 27 minutes. As coach Nash Racela said in his post-game conference, “We see ourselves in them last year. Ganyan kami, guys were playing too many minutes. We learned our lesson.”

The balanced effort from Racela’s boys were even more evident on the glass where they annihilated their opponents, 56-32. The FEU reserves also outproduced their counterparts, 38-18, to help their team move one win away from their 20th championship.

After a slow start, Ferrer sparked a 6-0 run to open the final frame that got UST back into the game. The rally ran out of gas, however, only two Tigers were able to get into double-digits.
