IT AIN'T OVER YET: The biggest comebacks in the UAAP Finals
ABS-CBN Sports on Nov 27, 2015 03:08 PM
YES, IT HAPPENS: Although comebacks in the UAAP Finals are a rare occurrence, they do happen. Will we witness a third straight comeback this season?
Yes, you can call it a comeback.
Even in a short best-of-3 series of the UAAP Finals, winning game 1 does not really guarantee a championship.
Just tell that to the teams these champion squads beat for the title even after dropping the opening salvo.
Since the Final Four format first started in 1994, only six teams have been able to win the UAAP championship after losing game 1.
And of those six, the last two happened in Seasons 76 and 77 respectively.
The UST Growling Tigers, currently down 0-1 to the FEU Tamaraws in the Season 78 Finals, happened to be involved in five of those six instances.
Season 57 and 58 Finals: UST def. La Salle
In the middle of their historic 1990s dynasty, the UST Growling Tigers scored back-to-back comebacks against rival La Salle to win the UAAP title.
In 1994, UST lost a close Game 1, 74-77, before winning the next two including the deciding third game by the slimmest of margins, 77-76 after the Green Archers' Elmer Lago missed two put-back attempts in the dying seconds of the game.
A year later in 1995, the Tigers would do it again against the Green Archers, winning both games 2 and 3 by a combined seven points to secure a three-peat.
Season 62 Finals: La Salle def. UST
In the late 1990s towards the early 2000s, La Salle finally had enough of finishing at second place and started a dynasty of its own.
And included in the own four-year run as champions was a revenge of sorts against UST.
After the Tigers took game 1 of the 1999 Finals, 62-60, the Green Archers would regroup and win the next two games. La Salle would force overtime on a three-point shot by Dino Aldeguer and eventually won Game 3, 78-75.
Season 69 Finals: UST def. Ateneo
The Growling Tigers once again worked their magic to steal the Season 69 championship away from the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
After a last-second Doug Kramer basket won game 1 for the boys in Katipunan, the Tigers blew the Eagles off the court in game 2 and survived a highly-emotional game 3 that went into overtime, 76-74.
Season 76 Finals: La Salle def. UST
La Salle once again got the better of UST in the latest installment of this underrated rivalry.
The Growling Tigers escaped Game 1 thanks to the defensive brilliance of Karim Abdul.
La Salle bounced back in Game 2 and the Green Archers were just a little bit more clutch in Game 3 and took the Season 76 title via a 71-69 overtime victory on Almond Vosotros' jumper. Classic.
Season 77 Finals: NU def. FEU
The NU BUlldogs ended a 60-year drought just last season after beating the FEU Tamaraws but they needed a full three games to do it.
After surrendering Game 1, the Bulldogs went on to dominate the rest of the series en route to an emotional championship celebration.
Game 2 of he UAAP Season 78 Finals between the UST Tigers and the FEU Tamaraws is on Saturday, November 28 at 2:30 PM! Catch it LIVE on ABS-CBN Channel 2, Sports+Action 23, BALLS HD 195, and sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/uaap
