GRADUATION YEARBOOK: Have you ever had a relationship as long as Pessumal and Ateneoís?

17 years in blue will never be taken away from Pessumal
NO OTHER SCHOOL SINCE BIRTH. True to the alma mater song he sings, Von Pessumal has chosen only Ateneo for his entire life.

After Ateneo de Manila University bowed out of the UAAP 78 Men’s Basketball Tournament and the Kiefer Ravena-Von Pessumal tandem played its last game in blue and white, ABS-CBN Sports was talking to Pessumal about what he will miss most in being an Atenean.

Right before he was able to answer, someone arrived on the scene to tell him something. That someone? Blue Eagles courtside reporter Laura Lehmann (just Google the connection if you don’t understand where this is going).

We would’ve completely understood if he did an “Enough said” mic drop after Lehmann’s serendipitous entrance and exit, but the sweet-shooter still gamely shared with us, “I’ve been (in Ateneo) for 17 years so I’m going to miss everything about it.”

Not recruited, not even scouted to play varsity ball, Pessumal serves as another proof that impossible is nothing if you want something bad enough and work hard enough to get it. And we’re not just talking about basketball here.

What will you miss most about being a Blue Eagle?

The atmosphere. Just being on the court and seeing a sea of blue cheering – you can never replicate that. I don’t think it will ever be the same for me which is sad.

What will you miss most about being an Ateneo student?

The culture. I’ve been with this institution for 17 years so I’m going to miss everything about it.

What is the legacy you will be leaving behind to the Blue Eagles?

Winning. Even if we lost, every single game I stepped on the court, I played to win. I never looked for my shot, I never looked for statistics, I played to win. That’s something I can leave behind in Ateneo – that if you put on this jersey, you don’t play for yourself, you don’t play for anyone, you play to win.

What is your final message to the Ateneo community?

I’ve been in Ateneo my whole life so I say thank you to all of Katipunan for my entire stay there.
