OUTCLASSING IN SESSION. NU still proved unsolvable even for Ateneo who rode a magical run all the way to the Finals.
Their two-week-long layoff didn’t matter. Their opponents’ five-game winning streak didn’t matter.
All that mattered for National University in Game One of the UAAP Women’s Basketball Finals was to move just one win away from their second championship in school history.
Afril Bernardino, Shelley Gupilan, and Risa Paig were in total control from start to finish as the Lady Bulldogs pounded on Ateneo de Manila University by 32 points, 91-59, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
NU’s stars has 47 points all to themselves, almost matching the output of their opponents before the Lady Eagles had a mini-burst near the end with the outcome no longer in doubt.
Gupilan and Paig already had a combined 17 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ rousing 36-13 start. Already ahead big, 43-20, at the half, NU ignited another 18-4 blast to establish the biggest lead of the game at 61-24.
Back-to-back MVP Bernardino added 18 rebounds and five blocks for good measure to extend the defending champions’ winning streak to 31 dating back to last season.
MVP runner-up Danica Jose had 13 points and 10 rebounds, but was held ineffective for the most part.
